The Center Wellington Mohawks Bantam girls lacrosse team stepped up in a big way last weekend, bringing home silver in its debut as an ‘A’ team in the Liftlock City Laxfest Peterborough Tournament.
Team officials call it “a huge win” for the team, which was previously classed in the ‘B’ division of the sport. Due to its regular season record (6-1-0) and a gold medal win in the Kitchener Angels Tournament last month, the team was bumped up to the top division.
In their first game the Mohawks defeated Whitby 4-3. The following morning they faced Peterborough and took the game with a 4-2 final.
These two wins advanced the Mohawks to the championship game, where they lost but left the tournament with silver, and their heads held high.
“I am extremely proud of these young ladies. We were the underdogs and not supposed to make it through the round robin,” said head coach Matt LeBeau.
“Every one of these girls stepped up, every one of these girls left everything they had on the field.
“Now everyone in the division knows who we are and that we came to play. This is an exceptional group to be coaching.”
